How can I receive training on the SAF System? – Important!
We recommend the completion of a proper training program before your first use of the SAF system. Refer to www.endovations.com for more details and for schedules on live and webinar-based programs. Or contact your Henry Schein or Endovations representative for more information.
How do I sterilize SAF instruments before use? - Important!
We recommend the autoclaving of SAF instruments before first use. The recommended maximum safe autoclaving temperature for SAF instruments is 121° C (250° F). Please ensure your autoclave is properly set to stay at this temperature while maintaining the autoclave manufacturer’s recommended time profile.
Which handpiece works with the SAF Instrument? - Important!
Do not use the SAF instrument in standard handpieces! SAF instruments require reciprocating motion plus irrigation and can only be used with the SAF RDT3 Contra Angle Head!
Will the RDT3 Contra Angle Head Fit On and Work with Other Handpieces?
The RDT3 Head has been tested and confirmed to connect directly to and can be set to operate at 5,000 rpm with the following items:
- KaVo 20k Contra Angle Sheath 1:1 | HSI# 628-3125 (discontinued, but still available)
- KaVo Medical Grade Contra Angle Sheath 1:1 | HSI# 628-5798 (provided in Intro Kits)
- KaVo Contra Angle Sheath 4:1 | HSI# 628-9802 (also featured in SAF literature)
- KaVo 20LP (Contra Angle Sheath)
- KaVo 68LU (Contra Angle Sheath)
- KaVo 2307LN (Contra Angle Sheath)
- KaVo 7LP (Contra Angle Sheath)

Which of the Contra Angle Sheaths Available with the SAF System should I be using, the 1:1 or the 4:1?
The maximum recommended operating speed of the SAF instrument and RDT3 Head is 5000 rpm.
- The 1:1 Sheath should be used when the optimal speed of the E-Style Motor being used is 4,000 to 5,000 rpm
- The 4:1 Sheath should be used when the optimal speed of the E-Style Motor being used is 16,000 to 20,000 rpm

Can I Complete an Entire Endodontic Procedure With Just One SAF Instrument?
After establishing a glide path, widening the canal orifice and filing to the working length with a #20 file, a single SAF instrument allows the simultaneous cleaning, shaping and thorough disinfection of a root canal in no more than 4 minutes. The SAF instrument is designed for optimal use with a single tooth.
Loading the SAF Instrument into the RDT3 Contra Angle Head
- Grasp the SAF instrument near the Shank/Irrigation Barrel section
- Securely attach the Irrigation Tube (from VATEA) to the SAF Irrigation Barb
- Gently push the Shank of the SAF into the friction grip Chuck of the RDT3
Head until a soft “click-into-place” sensation is felt
- Adjust the Irrigation Tube and Silicone Retaining Ring so the Tube is
out of the way of the SAF and the operator during use
How can I best manage the Irrigation Tube to keep it out of the way during use?
It may help to pre-cut and shorten the silicone Irrigation Tube to the minimum length needed during clinical use. Typically 2 ft. should be sufficient, depending on the placement of the VATEA Console in the operatory.
